Exciting Blog News!

As promised, there are some exciting developments in these parts. Well, exciting for me, anyway. As of tomorrow this blog will have a new home as it will be joining The Spectator. Consequently, there's a new URL. There are a few technical details that still need to be sorted out, but everything should be up and running pretty soon. Obviously I hope you'll join me at the Speccie. The game's a lot less fun when you're not playing too. Equally clearly this move wouldn't be happening without the support and encouragement of those of you who read this blog and those of you who have been kind enough to link here. So for that, many thanks.

A reminder: this blog's new home is here. It is, as the man said, a new day.

UPDATE: New RSS feed is here

All's Quiet on the Blogging Front

As you may have noticed, there's not been too much blogging in these parts this week. That will continue over the weekend. But early next week  -just in time for Barack Obama's inauguration, I hope - there should be some exciting blog developments to report. Stay tuned!

Further Adventures in Live-Blogging

We were here for the primary debates last year. We covered Obama vs Clinton. We live-blogged the Presidential debates and we dared not miss Biden vs Palin. But all of that was but a warm-up for the main event tonight.

Yup, taking live-blog absurdity to new heights, we'll be live-blogging the final of the World Darts Championship tonight. Obama vs McCain was small beer compared to the feast of drama afforded by Phil "The Power" Taylor's epic confrontation with Raymond "Barney Rubble" van Barneveld. So join us, from around 7.30pm UK-time (2.30pm EST) as we enjoy some terrific tungsten action tonight...

The Continuing Hiatus

If my RSS feed is anything to go by, American bloggers are much keener about blogging between Christmas and Hogmanay than are their British counterparts. Good for them, I dare say. I'll be back after the New Year holidays. That is, next Monday or something.

Scottish Politics Update

For those of you interested in Scottish politics, it's not a bad thing to be able, not before time, to welcome the country's newspapers to the blogosphere. So, huzzahs for The Steamie then, a new blog devoted to tartan politics written by the political journos at the Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News. I think they're having what's known as a "soft launch" and it will doubtless take them some time to become accustomed to blogospheric ways, but it's good to see them swimming in these waters...

So what kind of blog is this, anyway?

Well, according to this site - which purports to "analyse" your blog - I'm a Mechanic or an ISTP on the Myers-Briggs scale, just like Andrew Sullivan. This means that we're:

The independent and problem-solving type. They are especially attuned to the demands of the moment are masters of responding to challenges that arise spontaneously. They generelly prefer to think things out for themselves and often avoid inter-personal conflicts.

The Mechanics enjoy working together with other independent and highly skilled people and often like seek fun and action both in their work and personal life. They enjoy adventure and risk such as in driving race cars or working as policemen and firefighters.

Of course, I don't have a driving license, don't much care for fire and am prone to view the police with some suspicion.

My sister, by contrast, is a Doer, or an ESTP:

The active and playful type. They are especially attuned to people and things around them and often full of energy, talking, joking and engaging in physical out-door activities.

The Doers are happiest with action-filled work which craves their full attention and focus. They might be very impulsive and more keen on starting something new than following it through. They might have a problem with sitting still or remaining inactive for any period of time.

OK, then!

Bloggers & Ministers

I'm glad Trixy reminded me about the startlingly daft speech Hazel Blears, the Communities Minister (whatever that means), gave to the Hansard Society the other day. Though the irrepressible Mrs Blears was correct to bemoan the rise of a political class with no hinterland beyond Westminster (this also applies to the media classes, of course), it was her comments about blogs that were the purest Class A piffle. Apparently:

Until political blogging 'adds value' to our political culture, by allowing new voices, ideas and legitimate protest and challenge, and until the mainstream media reports politics in a calmer, more responsible manner, it will continue to fuel a culture of cynicism and despair."

But of course the entire point of the blogosphere is that it's entirely open to new voices and, indeed, new ideas. Equally, there's no requirement that it meet some government minister's definition of what kind of protests and chellenges may be considered "legitimate". And thank god for that. Finally, one might say that after more than a decade of this government, cynicism and despair are an entirely rational response to the state of Britain today.

Live-blog and chat

So this is where it all ends campers. That being the case it's only seemly to see out this marathon campaign with another live blog and chat extravaganza. That being so, everything will kick off here around 6.30EST/11.30GMT. It will, hopefully, be, like fun. There's history to be made, folks!

Travels in Wingnuttia

There are loonies everywhere, of course. Still, Jon Swift's summary of some of the anti-Obama conspiracy theories that have swilled around the wingnut blogosphere this year is a treat. He introduces his post, thus:

Hampered by quaint, old-fashioned rules of journalism that require citing evidence and reputable sources, the mainstream media has failed to report a number of important stories about Obama and the conservative blogosphere has had to step up and do the media’s job for them. As a public service I have collected some of the most important of these stories in one place. Pulitzer Prize judges, take note!

Some of the stories below are shocking and even hard to believe, but they weren’t published on crazy, fringe websites. They appeared on some of the most distinguished and well-respected sites on the Internet. The bloggers and online journalists who published them have staked their reputations and their sacred honor on the veracity of these reports. To doubt the truth of their findings, you would have to believe that an entire segment of the blogosphere has suddenly been gripped by hysteria and gone collectively insane, which is a pretty unlikely scenario.

Do read on. It's a hoot.

Sarah Palin* Killed My Laptop

Which is why blogging has been non-existent these past few days. However my new MacBook arrived half an hour ago and, all being well, we'll be back up to speed pretty soon.

*OK, I snorted liquor all over the keyboard in response to something preposterous she, or one of her cheerleaders, said. I forget which. Result? Computer No Worky.

Blogroll

Some additions to the blogroll. So, welcome to:

Karl Marx: Blogger

Norm has the details, of course:

Why do you blog? > To lay bare the economic law of motion of modern society. (1)

What has been your best blogging experience? > Have just finished correcting the last sheet (49th) of the book [Volume I of Capital]... So, this volume is finished. I owe it to you alone [Engels] that it was possible! Without your self-sacrifice for me I could not possibly have managed the immense labour demanded by the 3 volumes. I embrace you, full of thanks! (2)

What has been your worst blogging experience? > Constant labour of one uniform kind disturbs the intensity and flow of a man's animal spirits, which find recreation and delight in mere change of activity. (3)

Andrew Sullivan and Sarah Palin.

Let me make something very clear: I like, admire and respect Andrew Sullivan and his writing. I can’t remember when I first started reading his blog, but I think it must have been in early 2001. Certainly before 9/11. Since then I suspect I must have read more words written by Andrew than by any other journalist or blogger. Before his blog moved to Time and, subsequently, The Atlantic, I regularly contributed to his bi-annual pledge drives. I’d recommend his book, The Conservative Soul to anyone interested in the subject.

Heck, he’s often been kind enough to link to this blog  and, indeed, I once helped fill-in for him while he took a well-deserved break. In other words, I owe Andrew rather more than the nothing he owes me. That goes for most bloggers, mind you, even those to whom he hasn’t sent his readers. Any history of blogging - and its interaction with “traditional” journalism - that fails to include a lengthy passage on Andrew’s career is unlikely to worth reading. He’s done more for blogging than almost anyone else. I mean this.

From this you will surmise that there must be a rather hefty “but” on the way. And you would, alas, be correct. Nevertheless, the existence of this "but" does not in any way invalidate anything I've written here.

There are plenty of long-term Sullivan fans disappointed and even, in some cases, infuriated by his reaction to John McCain's decision to put Sarah Palin on the Republican ticket. That's everyone's prerogative of course and, equally obviously, Andrew can and should write whatever he damn well pleases. (Equally, I'm sure there are thousands and thousands of people who admire his recent writing and consider it the best stuff he's ever produced.)
