"One other thing: Mandelson was, I think, a pretty good Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Certainly, he was a great improvement upon his predecessor, the execrable Mo Mowlam."

Heh. I thought as I started reading this post, "Oh, I'll just use the comments to flag up the fact that he was a pretty good Sec of S. for N. Ireland, even though nobody ever seems to notice this, in contrast with Mo Mowlam, whom everyone seems to adore in spite of the fact that she was ghastly", but then I scrolled down and noticed you'd already said it.

I also can't be the only Tory who found himself in the odd position of cheering Mandelson on when he got in a scrap with Sarkozy over free trade.

I once queued behind Mandelson in a delicatessen in Helmsley (I was buying cheese, I think he was acquiring some sort of preserves). I felt I probably should have taken him to task on some pressing issue, or at the very least glared fiercely at the back of his head, but I instead made do with studied neutrality. He looked fairly miserable, actually. Reinaldo was nowhere in evidence, which might go someway to explaining it.
