Blimey. Barack Obama addresses a crowd of 75,000 people in Oregon yesterday.
Caveat: Remember all those stories about Howard Dean and the enthusiastic crowds he drew in the summer of 2003? How did that work out? Still, 75,000 ain't exactly chopped liver is it? The point being, of course, how does John McCain compete against this sort of enthusiasm - an enthusiasm that will result in acres of gushing press coverage too? An impressive turnout by any standard, it probably would have been larger had Waterfront Park been larger. Yet a poll released by Suffolk University today has Obama up by only 4 points, despite widespread agreement that he will be the nominee. That is rather unimpressive, if true. I wonder. (If it does turn out to be true, Obama will have serious trouble in November, I think.) Oregonians do not go to the polls like other states. All ballots are sent by mail to registered voters a month before the official due date, and are cast by mail, or dropped off at approved centers over the course of 30 days.
