many of the c's were looker uppers, in a struggle to get 4 bowlers I was thinking of Stuart Clark of the current vintage and the lack of openers was dragging me towards Alistair Cook, the middle order picks itself as does the keeper so we agree on 8 of 11 but the c's will be battling it out for relegation with the z's and q's.

look forward to the doshi & dujon fest of next weekend

Frankly I also think there is a better case for Alistair rather than Jimmy in the top slot. This is a test side: and while Barry Richards clearly showed his class for a prolonged period at the highest level despite missing much test cricket, that's a hard case to make for Jimmy.

If you juggle the batting order and promote a non specialist opener, you can find room for Ian Chappell, who was in any case a better skipper than his brother.

First name on your D team sheet: D'Oliveira- and you can bat him anywhere between 3 and 8, so that helps you. If you have not read Peter Oborne's book, please do so. The man once hit 225 out of 236 in 70 minutes in black African club cricket (the first ton coming in 25 minutes; 208 in boundaries), which was of higher quality than the white south african games of the time. In 1954 he scored 46 in an eight ball over: 6-6-6-6-6-6-4-6. Those are the two most stupendous achievements in batting, with the exception of what that 158 at the Oval meant to him and the team.

A warning: if Phil Defreitas bowls his wayward line and length into your squad, I will abandon my interest in this project.

Also interested in your thoughts on subcontinental names. Will Kapil Dev make an appearance next week, or do you need him more badly for the Ks?

Constantine for captain, surely. Not for him the sullying of the great game with underarm bowling. And also one of the game's great gentlemen off the field as well...unless you're supporting the hard-nosed Australian win-at-all-costs approach to the modern game?

I think you have missed a major trick, by omitting Chris Cairns: 218 test wickets at 29 and 33 with the bat. A proper modern all rounder, who solves some of your bowling crisis.

In conversations unseen by these boards, you have persauded me of Jimmy Cook's inclusion, but (pace CLR James) Challenor seems a thin pick. I'd move Cowdrey up to open - serve the fat old waddler right for knifing D'Oliveira... Cairns bats at six instead. I'd also give Cowdrey the captaincy (stiff upper gut, as it were, wins the day here).

Much as I would like to find a slot for Ian Chappell, I think Crowe keeps him out. And your inspired rediscovery of Cowie does for Caddick's prospects. Stuart Clark could well grab this spot pretty soon, however.

As such a fan of Warne, I am surprised by your views of Chandrasekhar, though he is clearly the class of the bowling here, with Sir Learie. I think Bill O'Reilly, Clarie Grimmett and Jim Laker might have something to say about that too, if they weren't all dead.

Hurrah! Romance and sense prevail. And a hat-tip too. All's well with the world. Now eagerly awaiting the Ds...

Drats. Just thinking ahead: there's no way Graeme Wood's going to make it ahead of Washbrook and Woodfull, is there?
